怪人、メルヘンを歌う。
世界で最も「濃い」白人のひとり、トム・ウェイツ。これは2002年のアルバム。92年初演の同名のミュージカルのために彼が書いた曲を新たにレコーディングしたものだ。
思えば昔から奴は怪人だった。76年の名盤【Small Change】を聴いて、その驚異的な濃さに痺れつつも「絶対にコイツは長生きしないだろう」と私は確信したものだ。その彼が21世になってもまだ生きていて（しかもいつの間にか禁煙してるし）アルバムを出している。中身を聴く前に、まずそのことに驚いた。
一曲目のタイトル曲「Alice」から、いきなり奇怪なハードボイルドメルへンが咲き乱れる。アウトローの権化、酔いどれの無頼派がファンタジックな歌詞を朗々と歌い上げる様は、このアルバムそのものが何かの冗談ではないのかと錯覚させるに十分だ。アレンジも渋すぎる。
冗談の極地は「Fish & Bird」。
they bought a round for the sailor叶わぬ想いを切々と綴った歌に、何故この声なのか。そう訝しみながらも聴くうちに、不思議と癖になる。その美しいメロディと相俟って、何とも切ない気持ちになってしまう。これぞまさににハードボイルドメルヘン。本当に良い曲だと思う私は、怪人の放つ妖気で平衡感覚が狂ったのだろうか。
